Digital Print of acrylic picture painted by the artist Margarita Wolff (www.rita-wolff.de).
Berenice lived from about 270 to 221 BCE. And was the consort of the Egyptian king Ptolemy III. When the latter went to the Third Syrian War, she promised to sacrifice her magnificent hair to the goddess of love, Aphrodite, should her husband return victoriously and intact. Ptolemy won, and Berenike cut off her hair and brought it to a temple. When the hair had disappeared the next day, the court astronomer told Konon that the gods had been so pleased with the sacrifice that they immortalized the head of hair in the sky.
